She learned that after a few times as well. Finally, we resorted to whispering our intentions. The lengths one has to go when your dog can spell!

Rushie: I hate tub baths! I get soap in my eyes and water up my nose. The only good part is drying off, when I bite and play tug of war with the towel. I don’t worry about getting a tub bath any more now because D always washes me with the hose.Playing in the water while D squirts me with the hose is one of my favorite games—I’ve been addicted to it since I was a puppy. It’s especially fun on hot summer evenings in Fresno.

I don’t mind D rubbing me with soap while we are playing; it’s not really part of the game but it sure beats bathing in the tub. I usually play in the hose and get a bath after D washes his car, once a week or so. There are only two things wrong with these baths. First, they don’t happen often enough. (D should wash his car more often—I hate to be seen in a dirty car.) Second, they don’t last long enough. (Before you know it, I’ve swallowed so much water that my stomach hurts and I have to quit.)

D and I don’t go places without M very often, but M and I go places without D all the time. When we go on a trip or a hike, for instance, it’s almost always the three of us. One weekend D and I went to the cabin and M stayed home. It turned out to be a weekend I’ll never forget.

Diary: October 13, 1999. Natalie had to work so Rushie and I went to the cabin by ourselves last weekend. Rushie was delighted to go with me, but Natalie, as usual, hated to be away from Rushie. Not only does she get lonely, she worries that am not careful enough and something will happen to her “baby.” She knows I love Rushie as much as she does, but thinks I’ll let her off the leash (which I do) and she’ll get hit by a car or lost on a hike. Or, most dangerous of all when we are at the cabin, get attacked by a coyote.

Rushie, on the other hand, loves to go places with just me. She knows that she’ll get to do things that she ordinarily wouldn’t. It reminds me of when as a young boy I went on fishing trips with my dad. I’d know that it was going to be different and fun, and the apprehension I detected in my mother made me believe that dad and I were co-conspirators in some slightly dangerous but very intriguing plot. I think Rushie felt the same way last weekend when she realized that we were going to the cabin alone—without Natalie.

When I got home from work Friday I decided to go to the cabin, even though Natalie couldn’t. I also decided to take the dog, which delighted Rushie and worried Natalie.
